ICAN

April 11, 2011

Four months ago, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) came out with the report that our nation’s cesarean rate again hit a record high.  To add insult to injury, 2009 was the 13th consecutive year to show an increase in cesarean sections.  To quote the report itself, “The cesarean delivery rate rose to 32.9 percent in 2009, another record high.” 32.9%

Just for a little bit of perspective- when the cesarean rate was first measured in 1965 it was at 4.5%.

The International Cesarean Awareness Network, Inc. (ICAN) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve maternal-child health by preventing unnecessary cesareans through education, providing support for cesarean recovery, and promoting Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC).  Our local ICAN chapter is the ICAN of Central Illinois.  You can find your local group (and grab some info on volunteering) here.  Don’t have a local ICAN?  Start one!
